DOTTIE’S STORY
I’m Dottie Rathel, Owner of Face the Day and Tuscany Salon Spas. In the fall of 2023, after almost canceling my yearly mammogram because I was too busy, I went to my appointment. After being called back for sonograms and later biopsies, I received the news I never expected: I had synchronous breast cancer in both breasts.
I was diagnosed with Stage 1, Grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma in both breasts, with no lymph node involvement. Since then, I’ve been through countless tests, surgeries, including a bilateral mastectomy, and various treatments. Thankfully, I did not need chemotherapy or radiation.
Needless to say, I kicked cancer’s ass! When I asked my oncologist what I should call my status, he told me, “You are cancer-free, in remission, and you are a survivor.”
Being cancer-free doesn’t mean it’s all over. I still fight every day to stay cancer-free, and I never take that for granted.
My grandson told me breast cancer should be called “chest cancer” because men can get it too. So men, pay attention to your bodies. Women, please get your mammograms. Don’t put it off.
Mammograms matter. They could save your life. They saved mine.
